A carbon footprint is one type of environmental indicator that shows the amount of greenhouse gases emitted, for example, by an organization in the process of creating a specific product. The value is also calculated for specific services, events and even countries. Importantly, it includes both direct and indirect emissions.

It should be emphasized that it is not only companies and public entities that produce a carbon footprint – every member of society contributes to the intensification of this phenomenon, for example, through the purchase of goods, especially those produced in an unsustainable manner.

Due to the growing awareness in society about green issues, more and more individuals and organizations are choosing to implement measures that help reduce their carbon footprint. What does this mean in practice?

Both in business and in everyday life, more and more attention is being paid to what the carbon footprint is and how our actions translate into the condition of the planet. Instead, each of us can choose public transportation or a bicycle instead of a car on a daily basis, limit our meat consumption, use reusable bags, segregate our waste or bet on seasonal and local fruits and vegetables. It’s worth keeping in mind that products from far-flung corners of the world will have a larger carbon footprint – especially if the company producing them does not make changes to optimize the transportation management of its goods.

While large companies are by far responsible for emitting the largest amount of greenhouse gases, it is worthwhile for each of us to know what a carbon footprint is and how to reduce it. Even small actions taken by individual members of society can make a really big difference.

Carbon footprint – what is it and what is the biggest contributor to it?

There is a lot of talk these days about what a carbon footprint is – but we are not always aware of what contributes most to it. The transportation industry, the food industry, and the production of electronic goods, among others, should be mentioned here.

At the same time, it is worth being aware that each of us, by using such services and deciding to purchase products, contributes to an increase in our carbon footprint. Therefore, it is worth making conscious, thoughtful decisions and betting on efficient and high-quality solutions that will serve us for many years.

Carbon footprint – how to calculate it?

Many companies and organizations are drowsing over how to calculate their carbon footprint – actively reducing it not only contributes to the good of the environment, but also has a positive impact on brand image. The process is unfortunately not simple. The calculation must take into account a number of different factors that have both a direct and indirect impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

For example, when calculating the carbon footprint for a particular product, we need to take into account the gas emissions during all stages of its manufacture, as well as those from its storage in a warehouse or during transportation.

How to calculate a carbon footprint should therefore be of interest to any company that wants to grow its business and strive to make its processes sustainable.
